"Skyfall" by Adele (video) from latest James Bond film
This exquisite song by Adele from the last installment of James Bond, is reminiscent of Bond theme songs from the sixties; classy, shades of a by-gone era, and totally "Bond"!
Not only is the theme song marvellous, "Skyfall", the film is pure class, possessing heart and depth, as well as the expected thrills and spills. The quiet, heartfelt moments in Scotland gave the film an unexpected, but beautiful aspect, never quite seen in previous Bond films. Daniel Craig is superb in his lead role, along with the greats of Judi Dench, Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes, and excellent villian, Javier Bardem, supported by a brilliant cast. Four out of five stars.

Starting with Atari and Nintendo and tracing the full 8-bit trajectory over the last 30 years. It’s true that video games have gone far beyond the 8 bit format. However, why do they still hold such a tender spot in our hearts? Explored.
Through the 1980′s, 90′s, and 2000′s 8-bit has become a cult following. Children who grew up playing Atari and Nintendo are now parents with children old enough to play video games. And many are introducing these children to their childhood games in much the same fashion as parents have shared their children’s books across the generations.
In today’s age, 8-bit now stands for simplicity and a minimalist form of creativity. There is a beauty to the crudeness. People enjoy understanding their technology. This documentary makes clear that this is ‘no nostalgia show.’ It is a high form of cultural thought.

Was the appropriation of Palestinian books and manuscripts in 1948 a case of cultural theft or preservation?
On May 15, Palestinians mark the anniversary of the “Nakba”, the systematic expulsion of the Palestinian people by Zionist militias that began in late 1947 and lasted through 1948 and beyond.
As well as land and properties, a lesser known aspect of that expulsion is that Israel looted Palestinian homes over their cultural treasures, among them books, manuscripts, personal papers, photographs and works of art.

I have friends who are both Muslim and Jewish, and I would like to see a world where everyone lived in harmony, but the subject of this film is fact, as was the Jewish Holocaust by the Nazis in the Second World War. Both are shameful acts of humans against humans and need to be lessons against similar inhumane behaviour in future. "Let Love Rule" between all nations and all people, because the alternative is just more of the same. Evolution dictates that we improve our behaviour or we cannot truly claim the title "civilized".

Worshiped by millions as the authentic burial cloth of Jesus, the Shroud of Turin is one of the most sacred and controversial relics of the Christian world. The image of Christ, believers say, was burned into the cloth fibers by the intense heat of resurrection. Behind the Cathedral that holds the Shroud, the Library of Palazzo Reale contains the self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci.

This extraordinary film will weave together different threads of this puzzle. It explains the enormous significance of the Shroud, and the controversy over its authenticity that has raged in recent years following attempts at scientific study. And it asks the question: if it is a fake, who on earth would have had the ability to create it? – for the image on the Shroud is no ordinary painting.
Experts on the Shroud, on renaissance art, image analysis, forensic science, and crucifixion argue how this strange and mysterious image might have been created – or how it could not have been. Was it created photographically, in a camera obscura, was the image burnt on by pressing the cloth against a heated sculpture? Was it indeed painted, using a very sophisticated technique? Every method suggested points to the fact that the artist would have needed unique talents, and the film demonstrates that these talents were exhibited by one individual: Leonardo da Vinci – inventor, visionary, scientist, anatomist, artist and heretic.
Leonardo had not only the means to create the Shroud, he also had the motive. His was a life of facing challenges, of discovering the unknown, of pushing the boundaries… and of devising riddles and practical jokes. He also despised the excesses of the Catholic church – though he moved among the upper reaches of its hierarchy. Indeed, he was close to the Pope himself, through whom he was familiar with the Savoy royal family. And it was the Savoys who, significantly, owned the Shroud at the time a Papal blessing gave it its aura of authenticity.

To a great extent, advertising tells us who we are and who we should be. What does advertising tell us today about women? It tells us just as did it 10 and 20 and 30 years ago that what’s most important about women is how we look. The first thing the advertisers do is surround us with the image of ideal female beauty so we all learn how important it is for a women to be beautiful and exactly what it takes. Jean Kilbourne continues her groundbreaking analysis of advertising’s depiction of women in this most recent update of her pioneering Killing Us Softly series. In fascinating detail, Kilbourne decodes an array of print and television advertisements to reveal a pattern of disturbing and destructive gender stereotypes. Pat Benatar "Here's My Heart" - Metropolis (Giorgio Moroder 1984) - Film.(video)..
My favourite song from one of my favourite films ever. Prefer the 80's soundtrack rather than the original music to this silent film classic, but either way, an amazing cinematic experience that still influences sci-fi today! "Metropolis" made in 1927 was the first full length sci-fi film. Science-fiction was not a particularly popular genre at the time and the film did not do well when first screened. The film ended up in pieces with film footage lost. In 1984, after many years of tracking down lost pieces of the film, "Metropolis" was released with a contemporary music sound track. This time, the film did exceptionally well in theatres around the globe. Years later, more film footage from "Metropolis" was found. The film was edited with most of its original footage and re-released on DVD with the original 1927 film score.
"Metropolis" with 1984 soundtrack trailers below is worth checking out for some glimpses into the sci-fi elements of this sci-fi masterpiece.

Author Ian Fleming wanted his suave secret agent to be the ultimate spy – but who provided the inspiration for Bond? This film reveals Fleming’s wartime service in naval intelligence and profiles two men who could have supplied the basis for Bond’s character.
On February 17th 1952, Ian Fleming sat down at his typewriter in Jamaica to write the spy story to end all spy stories. The central character of this story would become one of the world’s best-known and best-loved fictional creations: James Bond. Fleming would go on to write 12 novels featuring his super spy – each one an exciting blend of intrigue, escapism, sex and violence.
Bond’s popularity leaped when US president John F Kennedy declared himself a fan of the book “From Russia with Love”, but it was the start of the film series in 1961 that truly assured 007’s place in the big time. It is estimated that half the population of the world has seen a James Bond film, while Fleming’s books have sold over 100 million copies.
But is James Bond purely a fairytale? Can a 43-year-old former journalist with a liking for scrambled eggs, cigarettes and vodka martinis simply conjure up a fictitious character that has stood the test of time, without having some foundation in reality?
Fleming’s wartime career in naval intelligence saw him become intimately acquainted with the ways of the secret service, and he embarked on numerous top-secret missions to the US, France, Spain and North Africa. The events that occurred during this little-known period of Fleming’s life informed and influenced every aspect of Bond: his world, his women and his adventures.
Henry Chancellor, author of a book on Bond, believes Fleming “may have written fiction, but 95% of it was based on fact that had been filtered through the prism of his imagination and then polished up a bit”.

Saw this film a few days ago with little to no expectations. Although I love sci-fi, the movie advertisements didn't look promising so I wasn't expecting to be thrilled by this one. However, this film was a pleasant surprise - extraordinary special effects, clever storyline and a generally a truly enjoyable movie experience. I especially loved the huge hairless dog that racing around like "Speedy Gonzales"! I am looking forward to reading the books!
